On Tuesday, December 5, 2017, Representative Steve Knight (R-CA) reached out to Governor Jerry Brown's office to request a state of emergency be declared in Los Angeles County in response to the Rye Fire and Sylmar Fire. As of 4:30 PM Pacific time, the Rye Fire has grown to over 5,000 acres with only 5% containment. Governor Brown has declared a state of emergency in Ventura County in response to the Thomas Fire.

"This is an extreme situation that must be responded to immediately. Unusually heavy Santa Ana winds have created extremely hazardous conditions that are causing fires to grow at an extremely fast rate. I applaud the Governor's decision to declare an emergency in Ventura County and urge him in the strongest possible manner to declare one in Los Angeles County." said Rep. Knight "Emergency resources and personnel are needed in order to stop these fires as soon as possible and ensure the safety of our community."

"Thank you to the first responder who are actively fighting this fire and directing people to safety. To anyone in the region, it is imperative that you comply with evacuation orders and call 9-1-1 if you need immediate assistance."
