The National Audubon Society, one of the oldest and largest conservation organizations in the country, has endorsed two bills lead by Representative Steve Knight (R-CA). Each bill is supported by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.

H.R. 5610, the Better Energy Storage Technology "BEST" Act, was introduced by Rep. Knight and would establish "moonshot" goals to promote the development of commercially viable, large-capacity energy storage technology. If achieved, this technology holds the potential to be a significant boon for renewable energy sources like wind and solar who have challenges in widespread viability due to their intermittent nature. The BEST Act is cosponsored by 6 Republicans and 8 Democrats.

"America's future will be powered by clean energy, said Justin Stokes, Director of Government Affairs for the Audubon Society, in a support letter"and we laud your ambitious effort to promote the growth of renewable energy sources by speeding the development of this critical technology."

H.R. 5571, the Protecting American Solar Jobs Act, was introduced by Representative Jacky Rosen (D-NV) with Rep. Knight as an original cosponsor. This bill would repeal the 30 percent tariff on imported solar technology imposed by the Administration earlier this year. This bill is cosponsored by 4 Republicans and 1 Democrat.

"The solar industry is an important an growing economic driver in our nation, said Stokes in a separate support letter "According to the National Solar Jobs Census, the solar workforce has increased by 168 percent since 2011... The Solar Energy Industries Association estimates the tariff may contribute to a loss of 23,000 American jobs this year alone... We are grateful for your bipartisan leadership to advance our shared goals on supporting clean energy solutions for America."

"Neither political party has a monopoly on the right policies for energy development and environmental protection, said Rep. Knight "These two pieces of legislation are bipartisan and practical approaches to invest in American energy independence while simultaneously promoting promising new technologies that will help protect our climate. Being a good steward of the environment and ensuring economic vitality do not have to be mutually exclusive goals. I'm very pleased that these two bills received the support of the Audubon Society and I look forward to continue advocating creative solutions to these very important challenges."

Representative Knight is a member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee where he also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee. He is also a member of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in the House of Representatives. Audubon's letter of support for the BEST Act can be read in-full HERE.
