In the morning of May 10, 2018, the House Armed Services Committee voted to favorably report H.R. 5515, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019. The annual bill authorizes funding and establishes policy for the Department of Defense for the fiscal year beginning October 1. The markup process to consider final Committee Member amendments began at 10:00 am on May 9. It concluded at 12:35 am on May 10 when the Committee voted 60 - 1 to approve the comprehensive legislation.

Representative Steve Knight (R-CA), a member of the Committee, successfully included a variety of provisions in the underlying bill to support local priorities of his district as well as strengthen and streamline the U.S. military. These provisions addressed important acquisition programs, cutting edge technology, improving treatment options for victims of military sexual trauma, and advanced testing and research, and others. Additionally, Rep. Knight offered 7 amendments during the markup process. All were adopted with bipartisan support. Further information on the specifics of these provisions will be forthcoming from Rep. Knight's office.

"The NDAA is always an interesting and rewarding process where we can find solutions to support our troops and uphold our duties to defend the nation," said Rep. Knight "I'm proud to be a part of this committee that has a legacy of working in a bipartisan manner to pass policies to protect our country and ensure our troops have the tools and resources they need to get the job done. If we do our job right, no American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine will ever have to fight fair."

Rep. Knight is a veteran of the United States Army and serves on the Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces and the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. The FY19 NDAA authorizes $717 billion in spending, which includes $69 billion for overseas contingency operations.
