On Tuesday, Representative Steve Knight (CA-25) requested a Congressional hearing on the causes of the Porter Ranch gas leak and the feasibility of measures that could prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

In a letter to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railways, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Chairman Jeff Denham (CA-10), Rep. Knight urged the Committee to gather information and hear testimony regarding underground natural gas storage facilities with the goal of preventing gas leaks like the one that occurred at the Aliso Canyon facility last October. He also suggested that the Committee consider H.R. 4429, the Natural Gas Leak Prevention Act, a bill that Rep. Knight introduced last week that would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue adequate safety standards for underground natural gas storage facilities.

“This is an incredibly important matter, and bringing it before Congress would move us much closer to understanding what failed at Aliso Canyon,” said Rep. Knight. “Only then can we take steps to ensure that it never happens again.”

In addition to requesting a formal hearing, Rep. Knight asked to testify at the hearing on behalf of his constituents who have suffered due to the gas leak. Since last October, Rep. Knight has been gathering information on the issue by speaking with officials from relevant local, state and federal agencies as well as residents of the affected areas. Rep. Knight also toured both the troubled Aliso Canyon facility as well as the Honor Rancho storage facility, which is located in Santa Clarita. Rep. Knight says he looks forward to providing his insights to the Committee so that preventative measures like his bill can be effective.

“As we approach a resolution to the Porter Ranch gas leak, it is time we begin the process of recovery and prevention,” said Rep. Knight. “This hearing is a great first step in that process.”
