An Update on Porter Ranch
As the gas leak near Porter Ranch continues to affect the residents there, I am doing everything in my power to mitigate the effects of the leak and protect the residents of Porter Ranch. I have spoken with representatives of relevant agencies, such as the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, and as recently as Saturday attended the Southern California Air Quality Management hearing on the gas leak to hear from concerned residents.

Back In Session
On January 5th, Congress resumed its 114th session and immediately got to work with legislative business. In our first week back, we passed H.R. 3762, the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act of 2015, which would repeal the most harmful mandates and taxes of the Affordable Care Act. I would love to hear your thoughts on what else Congress should be acting on this year. To send me an opinion, visit my website here.

Taking Care of Business
On Wednesday I was proud to introduce my first bill of the new year: H.R. 4322, the DOD Mentor-Protégé Cooperation Reform Act. This commonsense legislation would simplify the qualification process for disadvantaged small businesses that are eligible to participate in the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Mentor-Protégé program. Our communities are in the unique position of having a huge presence of defense contracting companies as well as a large number of small businesses that are seeking government contracts. The DOD Mentor-Protégé Cooperation Reform Act would help bridge the gap between those two groups so that our region’s economy can thrive.

Holding the Small Business Administration Accountable
Last week I attended a House Small Business Committee hearing about deficiencies in the Small Business Administration’s management. I asked the Administrator, Maria Contreras-Sweet, about what she is doing to ensure that these problems are being corrected so that the SBA can effectively carry out its mission of providing financial and technical assistance to America’s small businesses.

Heroin Briefing
This afternoon I attended a roundtable with the Congressional Heroin Task Force. We heard from representatives of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the American Psychological Association who discussed the effectiveness of heroin treatments, access to care, and the development of future addiction medicines.
