Statement on American Health Care Act
As a husband to a nurse, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges families and patients face under our current health law, which is why last week  I voted in support of the American Health Care Act. I believe that our nation’s families deserve a healthcare system that is affordable and sustainable, not just for the next five years, but for generations to come. The reality is that the Affordable Care Act is failing across the country by making care more expensive and in many places, severely limiting choices. It’s not just failing in other states, it will eventually fail in California too. Action is required right now to replace its most damaging aspects before many families have no choices at all. I am pleased that the House adopted an amendment I authored that would ensure that individuals with pre-existing conditions are protected in every situation for every family, in every state, especially California. I have strongly advocated for and promised this throughout the entire discussion. This is a good first step, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to offer solutions that will address the problems faced by our current system and allow Americans access to the care they need.

Strengthening Cybersecurity
On May 2 I participated in a House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology markup in which we passed H.R. 2105, the NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Act of 2017. This bill would help our small businesses protect themselves from cyber-attacks by calling on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to provide small businesses with guidance to help them identify, assess, manage, and reduce their cybersecurity risks. You can watch the full markup here.

Aerospace Caucus
Tuesday I attended a briefing about U.S. Space Competitiveness with the House Aerospace Caucus. I am proud to serve as Co-Chairman of this important group that brings together industry leaders and public servants who are focused the exciting opportunities continued progress in aerospace research offer the nation. It is critical that public and private sector American leaders continue to have visible successes in air and space. The X-15, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs, among others, inspired countless young people to study STEM subjects and who are now accomplishing great things for our country.

NASA Meeting
It was great meeting with Robert Lightfoot, Acting Administrator of NASA on May 3. We had a fantastic discussion about the exciting aircraft designs they are working on that will change how we fly in the next few years. NASA must have the resources to build and fly experimental aircraft for U.S. aviation and aerospace to thrive.

Increasing Access To Capital
Last week I introduced bipartisan legislation along with Representatives Grace Meng (NY-6) and Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) to help make it easier for small businesses to access the capital they need to grow and create jobs. Small Business Investment Opportunity Act would expand the amount of capital available to the entrepreneurs in our community to help them grow their operations and hire more of our neighbors.
