KNIGHT’S ADDICTION PREVENTION BILL MOVES FORWARD
CONGRESSMAN APPLAUDS SENATE PASSAGE OF OPIOID LEGISLATION
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) –Representative Steve Knight (CA-25) lauded the Senate’s overwhelming vote on Thursday in support of a bipartisan bill that will provide badly needed resources for opioid and heroin addiction treatment and recovery programs.

Earlier this month, Rep. Knight cosponsored H.R.4697: Prevent Drug Addiction Act of 2016 along with Rep. Elizabeth Etsy (CT-5) and Rep. Ryan Costello (PA-6),  who also serve with Rep. Knight on the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic. The legislation would direct federal resources toward proven prevention strategies such as a consumer education campaign, training for medical practitioners on best practices when prescribing opioids, and a new management program specifically for Medicare beneficiaries who are at risk of prescription-drug addiction.

On Thursday, companion language to H.R. 4697 was added by an amendment to the Senate bill “The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act,” which passed the chamber with overwhelming support.

“In my 18 years as a police officer, I saw firsthand the damage that opiates and other drugs can inflict on families and communities,” said Rep. Knight. “I am pleased that our colleagues in the Senate took a big step in addressing the serious problem of opioid addiction, and I look forward to working with Representatives Esty and Costello to see this important issue through.”

Prior to cosponsoring the Prevent Drug Addiction Act, Rep. Knight gathered information about opioid abuse from local and national sources in his role as a member of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic. He participated in regular briefings with federal agencies, including the Center for Disease Control and the Drug Enforcement Agency, and in December he hosted a round table discussion with the Simi Valley Task Force on Heroin Prevention. Knight says he will continue to work with groups around the Antelope, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valleys to hone a comprehensive solution to the epidemic.

S. 524: Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 passed the Senate floor on Thursday by a vote of 94-1. The Prevent Drug Addiction Act of 2016 currently awaits consideration in the House Judiciary Committee.
