KNIGHT TO TESTIFY AT CONGRESSIONAL PORTER RANCH GAS LEAK HEARING
CONGRESSMAN WILL SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT ALSIO CANYON INCIDENT ON BEHALF OF RESIDENTS
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) –Representative Steve Knight (CA-25) will appear later this month at a Congressional hearing he requested regarding the causes of the Porter Ranch gas leak and the possibility of legislation that could prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Earlier this week, Rep. Knight sent a letter to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railways, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Chairman Jeff Denham (CA-10) requesting that the Committee gather information and hear testimony regarding underground natural gas storage facilities with the goal of preventing gas leaks like the one that occurred at the Aliso Canyon facility last October. On Friday morning, the Committee announced that it would hold such a hearing on February 25, and that Rep. Knight will testify on behalf of his constituents in Porter Ranch who were affected by the leak.

“As we approach a resolution to the Porter Ranch gas leak, it is time we begin the process of recovery and prevention,” said Rep. Knight. “This is a great first step in that process.”

Rep. Knight’s testimony will include information that he has gathered on the topic by speaking with officials from relevant agencies and affected residents and touring both the troubled Aliso Canyon facility as well as the Honor Rancho storage facility, which is located in Santa Clarita. Rep. Knight is also expected to discuss H.R. 4429, the Natural Gas Leak Prevention Act, a bill he introduced in January that would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue adequate safety standards for underground natural gas storage facilities.

“This is an incredibly important matter, and I am pleased that my colleagues will examine it sooner rather than later,” said Rep. Knight. “Once we understand what failed at Aliso Canyon, we can take the necessary steps to ensure that it never happens again.”

The Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials will hold its hearing on Thursday, February 25, at 10 A.M. EST. More information on the Porter Ranch gas leak can be found on Rep. Knight’s website at https://knight.house.gov/aliso-canyon-gas-leak-update.
