(PORTER RANCH, CA.) –Representative Steve Knight (CA-25) took another step toward preventing future Porter Ranch-style gas leaks this weekend by hosting a top Congressional leader on a tour of the Aliso Canyon site.

Representative Jeff Denham (CA-10), Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railways, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials, traveled to Porter Ranch on Saturday morning at the request of Rep. Knight. The two congressmen toured the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility, which sprung a leak last October that caused many residents of nearby communities to relocate their homes and businesses. Rep. Knight says the purpose of the tour was to provide Chairman Denham with first-hand information and perspective about the site so that the causes of the leak can be properly addressed by Congress.

“Now that the leak is sealed, we must take steps to understand exactly what failed so that we can prevent similar incidents from ever happening in our communities again,” said Rep. Knight. An important part of that is giving leaders in Congress a firsthand look at the site so we can directly address the problem together.”

Last month, Chairman Denham invited Rep. Knight to testify to the Subcommittee on Railways, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials during a hearing regarding pipeline safety. There, Knight discussed H.R. 4429, the Natural Gas Leak Prevention Act, a bill he introduced in January that would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue adequate safety standards for underground natural gas storage facilities. He noted that the legislation is the product of months of research that included multiple tours of gas storage facilities and discussions with other members of Congress who have expertise on the issue, including Chairman Denham and Senator Deb Fischer from Nebraska, who passed similar legislation in the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee last December.

"Congressman Knight has given testimony in front of our committee and offered crucial legislation to make sure this kind of leak never happens again," said Chairman Denham. "His efforts have helped us recognize the importance of this issue. I also want to see the impact first hand, and I appreciate his invitation."

“I am very grateful that Chairman Denham recognizes the importance of this issue and traveled so far to understand what happened in Porter Ranch,” said Rep. Knight. “I look forward to working with him and my other colleagues in Congress to advance comprehensive legislation that prevents another incident from happening in our communities ever again.”

H.R. 4429 currently awaits consideration in committee. Chairman Denham and Rep. Knight are hopeful that it will be included in a broader legislative package that addresses national pipeline safety later this year.
