Combating the Heroin Epidemic
On April 21 I stood alongside my colleagues in the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic as we announced a package of bills aimed at solving the nationwide heroin epidemic with a wide range of strategies. In my 18 years as a police officer, I saw firsthand the damage that opiates and other drugs can inflict on families and communities, and I am proud to be a part of the solution as a member of the House.

Small Business Bill Clears Committee
Great news! A bill I introduced this year that would help some small businesses compete for federal contracts passed committee this week and is headed to the floor. H.R. 4322, the Mentor-Protégé Cooperation Reform Act, would reform the Department of Defense’s Mentor-Protégé program to help certain small businesses compete for federal contracts by making it easier for them to receive mentoring from larger, more experienced firms. Read more here.

Defending National Defense
On April 27, I spent 18 hours in a House Committee on Armed Services hearing. We marked up and passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, which authorizes funding for most of our country's defense operations next year. Not only is the NDAA crucial to our national security, but it also has a tremendous positive impact on the economies of the Antelope, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valleys. This year’s NDAA includes provisions that will directly benefit Edwards Air Force Base and Naval Base Ventura County, as well as the many businesses in our area that contract with the federal government.  Additionally, it gives a well-deserved 2.1% pay increase to our troops. I will keep working with my colleagues on initiatives like this one to make sure we provide for future generations of Americans who answer our country’s call of duty.
