(SANTA CLARITA, CA) Representative Steve Knight (CA-25) hosted a Workshop and Expo for local small businesses on Tuesday. The event featured guest speakers, expert panels, and a resource fair all focused on empowering and strengthening the local small business community.
Over 140 small business owners and entrepreneurs gathered at the Santa Clarita Activities Center to attend Rep. Knight’s Workshop. The morning kicked off with remarks by the Congressman, who spoke about the importance of small businesses in the community and in the nation’s economy.
“Small business owners like you are absolutely necessary for us to thrive as a nation,” said Representative Knight. “You provide our neighbors with jobs and our community with the products we need.”
Following Rep. Knight’s speech, the audience heard from two guest speakers: Dr. Terry Paulson, an author and motivational speaker, and Vivian Shimoyama, a CEO of the Goldman Sachs “10,000 Small Businesses” Program. Both speakers focused on empowering entrepreneurs to grow and succeed.
“Government is not the solution to our economic challenges,” said Dr. Paulson in his speech. ”That's why I'm excited we have a freshman congressman who's hosting a workshop like this, because it's small businesses that are going to grow our economy.”
Next, a series of panels discussed tactics to navigate federal regulations and rules to help win government contracts, increase their access to capital, and boost their sales overseas. Representatives from the U.S. Army, the Defense Logistics Agency, and Northrop Grumman offered insights and tools to work through the federal contracting process; lending experts and Christina De Bono, President of Vsolvit, talked about the best means for obtaining conventional and alternative financing; and spokespeople from the Port of Los Angeles, the Department of Commerce, and the Small Business Administration U.S. Export Assistance Center provided information on international trade for businesses looking to expand their overseas operations.
The event concluded with an Expo in which small business owners could meet one-on-one with representatives from government agencies and companies to expand their networks of expertise, partners, and resources.
“Today hundreds of small business owners in our community had the opportunity to connect with the resources they need to grow,” said Representative Knight. “I look forward to holding similar events throughout the area in the future.”
